Abandon - Wild state in which a sailor acquires a boat.
Wild state in which a sailor relinquishes a boat!
Boat Yard Journal
January 30, 2006
I had every intention of making this a
continuous journal, however time, work and
sailing have gotten in the way. I will try to
update this journal if I have some major news
etc, however I think I plan on focusing my
attention to the rest of the site as of right
now.

So....today was a busy day on the boat. My
main goal was to finish the cockpit floor, re-install the flotation and seal off
the area. I was able to finish the floor and flotation but not sealing it all
up. Two out of three isn't bad..right? The cockpit floor was spongy when we
bought it do to delaminating fiberglass and a SOAKED balsa core. I remedied this
by removing the delaminating glass, the soaked core and then placing new fiber
with a Styrofoam core followed by plywood panels that are bracketed into the
bulkheads. This whole TEDIOUS and UNCOMFORTABLE process (I should be a
contortionist...after all the squirming I had to do to get under the cockpit)
took quite a while but has yielded a solid floor. Once this was all set, I
re-installed the flotation, filling any gaps with liquid Styrofoam. Later this
week I'm going to seal the space up with plywood and fiberglass, and then finish
off the lockers. I'll have pictures of all this shortly. Just to avoid any
confusion...the removal of the delaminating glass and soaked core was done
several weeks ago and has had plenty of time to dry in this wonderful hot Rhode
Island Summer!

Getting stuff together for a long day working on the boat
tomorrow....plywood, sand paper, etc etc.
Just some words of wisdom....... When using liquid Styrofoam (the yellow
stuff in the spray can)...do as the label says and WEAR GLOVES....I'm still
peeling it from my hands three days later!!!!!

WHAT A DAY!!!! I was able to get soooo much done. The v-berths are almost
done, just need to install the tops for the side berths, the cockpit lockers
have been sealed, floors installed and drains installed. The drains were a
bargain...I bought clear 1/2 inch washer tubing at home depot and pvc plugs and
clamps...drilled my holes in the plywood floor, put the plugs in, clamped one
end of the hose to the plug and the other runs to the bilge, then drilled a hole
into the plug so water can run into the tubing...all for a few bucks! Gotta love
home depot!!!
Hopefully will get more done tomorrow...keep you updated!

So, work finally caught up to me....but at least they were very productive
days at work that had positive outcomes. Anyway....worked on the boat
today...finished the v-berth, installed the tops, cut the holes for the lids,
installed the head stringers, began to reinstall the nave station and head
surround with a addition of a shelf underneath the chart table/nav station that
should allow for the batteries to be put in place and provide storage for a
portable stove etc.
I've brought all the cabin finish woods home with me and am going to gel
stain them a nice cherry color and provide the yachtsman's finish of urethane!
I've just dropped off the camera at CVS...so more pictures will be up
shortly.
OHHH!!!!!! LET ME TELL YOU ONCE AGAIN HOW MUCH I LOVE HOME DEPOT..... I LOVE
HOME DEPOT, I bought 4 quarts of alkyd enamel white and gray paint (2/2) for
$4.00 !!!!!!! This will be used in the cabin and bilge!!!!!!

Ok...SORRY to all that I have not been able to update the site in a
while...my computer had an extended stay in the hospital...anyway....I've gotten
a LOT of work done on the boat.
